Landon Donovan: Former US Soccer Star Retires
Donovan, who played for the US national team from 2000 to 2014, announced his retirement on Thursday.
The 41-year-old forward is considered one of the greatest American soccer players of all time.
Donovan won the MLS Cup six times, the US Open Cup four times, and the CONCACAF Champions League twice. He also helped the US win the 2013 Gold Cup.
Donovan's retirement comes after a successful career in which he scored 184 goals in 534 appearances for club and country. He is the all-time leading scorer for the US national team.
Donovan said in a statement that he is "proud of what I have accomplished in my career and I am grateful for the opportunity to have played the game I love at the highest level." He added that he is "excited to see what the future holds" and that he plans to "continue to be involved in the game in some capacity."
