A Timeline of the Life of Charles Darwin

Early Life

Charles Darwin was born at The Mount Shrewsbury on February 12, 1809, the fifth child of Robert Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood.

Development of Evolutionary Theory

In 1842, Darwin wrote his first essay outlining his evolutionary theory, which he had been developing for several years.

Later Life

In 1842, Darwin moved to Down House in Bromley, Kent, where he spent the rest of his life working on his theory of evolution.

Darwin read the anti-evolutionary books of both the Frenchman Georges Cuvier, who believed in numerous separate creations, and the Englishman Richard Owen, who believed in a single, unchanging creation.

Charles Darwin died on April 19, 1882, at the age of 73.
